Lost Pet Game Plan

This entry was posted on Friday, October 20. 2006 and is filed under Hamptons Life.

Last summer, a friend appeared on our doorstep distraught over her cat Jean-Marie that had vanished from the home of the careless petsitter in Amagansett. Luckily, we were well prepared to take action. The previous fall we had found a lost dog without tags roaming Ocean Road. After hours of frantic calls, the nice golden retriever with a limp spent the night in our sun room. His owner claimed him the next morning, getting our number from Animal Control.  Although we frequently see those 'lost pet' signs on neighborhood trees (that the posters generally do not have the courtesy to remove weeks later), your actions in the first few hours are the most important to recovering your pet.

Beyond  the local search, this is our immediate game plan if you have either lost or found a pet.  Be sure to leave your name/phone number wherever you call so you can be found.

1. Call Sag Harbor radio station WLNG 92.1 FM
They will swing into action with their "Pet Patrol" announcements and play them often. Please remember to call them back when your pet has been found. Phone is 631-725-2300. You can listen to the broadcast online at www.wlng.com.

2. Call the Town Animal Control & Shelters
Southampton Town Animal Shelter    728-7387, open 10-6, 7 days/week
Southampton Town Animal Control    728-1088, open 8-4:30, 7 days/week
East Hampton Animal Control             324-0085, open 8-6, 7 days/week

3. Call Town and Village Police
Although the police refer all calls to the Animal Control Departments, you may want to check in anyway, especially off-hours, when Animal Control is closed. The police will generally hear about lost dogs, not cats.
Southampton Town Police           728-5000
East Hampton Town Police          324-0024
EH Town Police-Montauk             668-3709
Southampton Village Police         283-0056
Sag Harbor Police                        725-0247
Quogue Police                             653-4791
East Hampton Village Police        324-0777

4. Call Shelters
These shelters will report lost animals to Animal Control, but it's always worth a call to cover all bases.
Bide-a-Wee in Westhampton        325-0280
Elsa's Ark in East Hampton           329-2900
ARF in Wainscott                           537-0400

5. Call Vets & Animal Hospitals
Old Towne Animal Hospital in SH   283-0611
Good Friends in EH                        324-7900
EH Vet Group                                 324-0282
Village Vet in Sag Harbor               725-0815
Dr. Browning in Sag Harbor           725-6500
Shinnecock Animal Hospital            723-0500
WH Beach Animal Hospital             288-8535
Hampton Vet in WH                        325-1611
East End Vet Emergency in RH       369-4513
Riverhead Animal Hospital              727-2009
Kent Clinic in RH                              727-7797

I keep a list in my phone book, under "lost animals", of all of the numbers (along with WLNG's number 725-2300) needed to notify locals vets and animal shelters in both East Hampton and Southampton towns. I have learned that people may bring lost pets to their own vets or animal shelters which may not be near where they found the straying pet.

I had that experience myself when someone found an elderly dog of mine that slipped away in the dark one night as I was walking it on our property and brought it to a neighboring town's animal shelter as it was nearest to where they were heading. I got my pet back quickly the next morning when I started calling my list of local shelters and vets.

Two weeks ago a woman stopped at my house to ask if I had lost a dog - I had not - as she had found one near by. She had brought it to ARF which told her she had to take it to the Southampton Town Animal pound as she had found it within Southampton township borders. She did, then was going house to house in the vicinity to see if she could find the owner which was very kind of her. I told her about my call list and getting a phone we went through it to notify everyone about the dog's wherabouts so that its owner could locate it quickly.
