Happy in Amagansett

Monday morning the
Peconic Land Trust and the
Town of East Hampton finalized the lengthy purchase of the Amagansett Farmers Market. Everyone acknowledged the importance of saving this small but historic property. The Farmers Market was always an East End destination—the place to go for specialty ingredients and vegetables, before most of the local gourmet shops existed. A beloved morning hangout for families and share house singles alike, it was also a vital year-round food source for the neighborhood.
And just so you won't have to drink your coffee without a
raisin pecan loaf, the
East Hampton Press reports today that
Eli Zabar will take over management of the market. Zabar plans to open in August, an admirable goal since the structure has been dramatically altered. Rampant code violations forced the removal of large portions of the building including the rear produce area. While business motives may drive his speed, we should truly view an August reopening as a gift to the community.
John Halsey's Peconic Land Trust is on an acquisition roll. Next month they will take over stewardship of the beautiful
Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton, a five-acre oasis of paths and ornamental gardens. Just one of many hidden pleasures here. Take your children—they will enjoy the topiaries and bamboo.
