Leaving Sagg Main at 6:30pm tonight, waves of crowds were rolling in for Monday night drumming. The lot was already full and cars were parked up the road. We watched a pickup crash a car's bumper and saw a type of road aggression associated with a seasonal species of large black SUV.
Last August we posted a piece about the drumming circle. In the past two weeks there have been so many hits to that 2007 piece, that it's evident this once-quiet event, has raised tremendous interest. Tonight's kids-in-tow crowd probably rivaled that of the long-established annual Dan's Papers Kite Fly. (2008 date: August 17)
What's next? Marketers handing out Stride Rite sneakers and Coppertone Kids to tykes sprawled on beach blankets? We're guessing that this event is over. Word is, the organizer has been a bit uncomfortable with the growing crowd. What started as a word-of-mouth happening has now become a "what to do in the Hamptons over my summer vacation" broadcast event. Oh well. The circle will surely reincarnate itself in its former rotating form.
